After over 8 months, without a competitive game, ( due to some mad virus, 🤔) Clydeside AFC 07s finally got the chance to play a match !
Ironically, their first game back, saw them entertain Paisley rivals, St Mirren, in what was a keenly anticipated contest!
The away team started strongly, and it was clear that they relied heavily on their two strikers. However, the back 4 of Rory, Kieran, James and Josh worked hard to repel any danger !
As CAFC finally got a foothold in the game, with some good play from Carter and Cameron in midfield, they were awarded a free kick 35 yards out!
The coaches of Clydeside were fully aware that Leo can strike a football very well! Proof of this was the loss of 2 balls over the St Columba fence in Gourock, and which have been apparently sighted in Largs !
So a 35 yard free kick presented no fear to the CAFC captain for the day !
He duly delivered, and planted a floater into the back of the St Mirren net, to put the home team 1-0 up!
This became 2-0, when the same player made a great run down the left, to square for young Zack, to side foot home !
All the momentum was now with Clydeside, the home crowd were anticipating more goals !
However, as St Mirren were awarded a corner, their coaches let out a scream that the wrong size of ball was being used !
Despite Coach Ryan’s protests, that a size 4 was correct for this age group, a size 5 football was thrown to the St Mirren player by his coach, and the ref agreed !
Whatever magic dust was sprinkled on the new ball, it rendered the entire Clydeside defence static , as the St Mirren striker nodded home!
2-1 and the St Mirren team were chasing an equaliser !
Some brave goalkeeping from young Morrison kept his team ahead !
The home team showed their resolve again by increasing their lead, just before half time. Zack notched his second goal of the game, pouncing at close range to make it 3-1 to CAFC.
Into the second half, and the home team were confident that they had enough in the tank to keep, or even increase their lead ! Robbie, replaced James at centre back, with the latter moving to midfield .
Unfortunately it was the away team that got stronger as the game wore on. Their pacy striker took advantage of slack play by Clydeside on two occasions, and levelled the game at 3-3.
As it looked like the away team were going to steal all 3 points, the introduction of Ethan and Connor, gave Clydeside the impetus that was required !
One such great passing move between James, Ethan and Connor, saw the latter get to the bye line, and cut back a ball that was initially saved by the St Mirren gk!
However, the ever alert Lewis, was quickest to react and side foot the ball home with 5 mins remaining !
This proved to be the winner and gave the boys a hard earned first win !
Credit to all the boys for keeping going against strong opponents!
It was a squad effort, with every boy playing their part!
Coaches Man of the match was J O’Malley.
